1. What is Reportage Photography?
Reportage or documentary photography captures the real events of your wedding, rather than staging. Good documentary photography allows people to behave naturally, and tells the whole story as it really happened. It’s the ideal choice for couples who don’t want the intrusion of modelling for a photographer.
2. How many photographs do you take?
Every wedding is different, and there are no fixed rules, but after a long wedding I might finish with 1000, or more. After careful editing this reduces to 200-300 favourites. My photographic style is most productive in places that have plenty of space, natural light, and happiness!
3. How long are you available for?
As long as you want. I often start early, photographing the preparations, and continue into the night. If you only want a portion of the day recorded I can tailor a package to suit.
4. Where are you based and how far will you travel?
I’m based in Bristol and work extensively in Bath, Devon, Somerset and South Wales, but travel anywhere. The furthest my work has taken me to date is Sri Lanka.
Absolutely. Successful wedding photography depends on a good rapport, and meeting you is the best way to understand your needs. I encourage clients to share their feelings or ideas, and no request is too difficult to consider. Most of all, I want you to feel comfortable with me, as your photographer.
6. How to find your ideal wedding photographer.
There are many wonderful websites out there, but in my opinion, this is just packaging; a distraction. Your most important consideration with a photographer should always be their work. This is where your choice should start, and end. If you have found someone you like, spend time with their images, get a feel for what they do. Styles differ greatly. If your looking at pictures of brides and grooms walking through fields, hiding in forests, or urban industrial, then it’s not natural or documentary, whatever they say. If it looks like it’s straight out of a magazine, then expect to be modelling. Trust your instincts, and when you are closing in on a decision, try to meet up. You can’t beat a good old fashioned conversation to make that decision easier.
7. Will you visit the venue before the big day?
When necessary and where possible. If the venue is in Bristol or Bath there is a good chance I know it already. Knowing the venue reduces the chance of unexpected surprises, and means I will have more time record your wedding in the best way possible.
8. Do you work with an assistant?
No, I work alone. My style of reportage photography requires mobility and discretion. I do sometimes work with a collegue, but that’s a combination of two different styles, and is only by arrangement, at an extra cost.
I use two Canon 5D II’s and several lenses, carried in a Rucksack. I prefer to minimise the use of flash.
Digital. Even though it’s still a relatively young technology, great advances have been made in last few years. The image quality can now equal or exceed the best results ever possible on 35mm film. I knew within 30 minutes of owning my first digital SLR that I was never going back. The cameras I own feel intuitive, they give me more control, and most importantly produce wedding images that are better than ever before.
11. Can you provide colour and black and white?
Yes. Because all my work is digital any photograph can be presented in colour or black and white, or both. Not all photographs suit monochrome, but when a picture does it often looks fantastic. I will choose some myself, but I’m available to give you advice on further selections. This part of creating your wedding photography can be lots of fun for everyone.
12. Do you also do posed shots?
Yes, but I try to keep these to a minimum. With a bit of planning, and the help of someone who knows those involved, I can minimize the time people have to stand around and return quickly to documentary photography.
13. Do you do midweek weddings?
Absolutely, and as midweek weddings tend to be shorter, I can tailor a package to suit. My hourly rate for short weddings is £150, and I also offer a 10% discount during off season (Nov – Feb).
14. Do you do more than one wedding in a day?
No. It’s your day and you have my undivided attention. If I was thinking about another appointment you wouldn’t get the best results.
15. How will I view the photos taken?
I upload your finished wedding photographs onto this website for viewing. Your album is password protected, and this is a popular way for friends and family to enjoy your wedding photographs. Next you can choose between prints, albums, or a viewing disc.
16. Can our friends and family buy copies of photographs from you?
Yes, I provide high quality prints at reasonable prices. Prints are ordered from your on-line album, via Paypal.
